Forbes just released its annual list of the World’s Most Valuable Sports Teams for 2014 and both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Manchester United, teams owned by the Glazer family, made the cut for the second consecutive year.
It’s a fitting tribute to family patriarch Malcolm Glazer, who passed away in May at the age of 85.
Manchester United of the English Premier League, finished third with a total value of $2.81 billion. Adidas recently inked a uniform deal with the club worth $1.3 billion over 10 years, starting in 2015. It is the richest uniform deal in sports history.
Only two other soccer clubs — Real Madrid of the Champions League ($3.44 billion) and FC Barcelona of La Liga aka the Spanish League ($3.2 billion) — made more than Man U in 2014, which is coming off its worst season since 1992.
All three soccer teams finished in the top three last year as well, with Barcelona overtaking Man U this year. Last year, Barcelona was worth $2.6 billion while Man U was worth $3.165 billion. Barcelona, appeared to benefit from an $800 million stadium renovation and the addition of Neymar.
The New York Yankees came in fourth with $2.5 billion. The Dallas Cowboys came in fifth at $2.3 billion, with a 25-year stadium naming rights deal with AT&T last year worth an estimated $500 million.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, meanwhile, came in 30th with a value of $1.067 billion. Last year, the Bucs finished 28th with $1.033 billion. This year, the team was overtaken by the Chicago Cubs, who went from No. 31 to 21, from $1 billion to $1.2 billion. The LA Lakers also moved ahead of the Bucs, jumping from No. 31 to No. 15, $1 billion to $1.35 billion.
The Glazer family purchased the Bucs in 1995 for an NFL-record $192 million. The family began buying shares of Man U in 2003 and gained full control of the organization in 2005.
All but two NFL teams — the Jacksonville Jaguars and Oakland Raiders — made the list.
