The 2013 season for Connor Barth was over before it even began. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker tore his Achilles’ tendon in a charity basketball game Friday and will be placed on the reserve/non-football injury list.

On Monday, Barth underwent surgery to repair the injury, but doctors determined he won’t be able to play this year.

The team signed veteran kicker Lawrence Tynes, a 2012 Pro Bowl alternate, to replace him.

Shortly after the announcement, Barth tweeted the following message:

“I really want to say a big thanks to all my fans out there for the kind words! I will be back better than ever next year! #ItsABucsLife”

He also posted this photo:

“We are disappointed to lose a productive player like Connor, but are very fortunate to be able to sign an experienced kicker at this time of year,” said Buccaneers General Manager Mark Dominik.

“Lawrence and his agent, Ken Harris, had other standing opportunities, but we are pleased that they thought this was the right place for Lawrence to continue his career.”

This offseason, the team signed veteran kicker Nate Kaeding to create competition and limit Barth’s reps, but Kaeding elected to retire due to injury.
