Bucs Hold Final Practice Before Last Round of Cuts
The Bucs held a special teams practice Saturday morning in jerseys and shorts.? With final cuts due by 6:00 pm today, it was interesting to note the smaller group of players on the field, with several notable players absent, including WR Ed Gant, TEs Nathan Overbay and Ryan Purvis, RBs Mosis Madu and Armando Allen, S Ahmad Black, and LBs Derrell Smith and Simoni Lawrence.? S Devin Holland, Larry Asante and Corey Lynch, TE Luke Stocker, WRs Micheal Spurlock and Preston Parker, DE George Johnson, CBs Anthony Gaitor, DJ Johnson and Elbert Mack, and RBs Kregg Lumpkin and Allen Bradford were all on the practice field.
George Johnson, who was leading the NFL in sacks during the preseason, is a player who appears to be on the borderline of making the 53-man roster.? He says it?s nerve-wracking waiting for a call he hopes he won?t get today.
?It definitely is,? Johnson said. ?I was hoping my phone wouldn?t ring at all.? And then when I got in today, I was hoping nobody tapped me and told me to come with them.?
Johnson will try to keep his mind occupied during the day.
?Just enjoy my day off, relax.? Watch some college football.? Watch movies and things like that.?
Gaitor, the Bucs? 7th-round draft pick this year, has made some splash plays in the preseason and has increased his value by fielding returns and learning both the nickel and outside cornerback positions.? Although he?s made a very strong case to make this roster, he continues to wait along with the rest of the hopefuls.
?I take it as another day,? Gaitor said. ?Until I hear something, I?ll leave it as that.?
Raheem Morris Speaks on Lee Roy Selmon
Bucs head coach Raheem Morris expressed his sadness of the news of Lee Roy Selmon being in critical condition on Saturday following a stroke on Friday evening at his home.
?It?s obvious, being the first person in the ring of honor.? With all the rumors going around yesterday, with what happened, how it happened, everybody was just broken up,? Morris said. ?Heard he was in Oklahoma, heard he was in Tampa.? Nobody knew where he was and everybody was just worried and concerned.?? Thankfully, it was for the best.? Thankfully, we can all pray for him and have him in our prayers and hope everything works out.
Morris recognized the overwhelming impact Selmon has had upon the Buccaneer franchise and the Tampa Bay community.
?What he?s meant to us has been unbelievable.? Three and thirteen, ten and six, starting a new season, it didn?t matter.? Lee Roy Selman was a constant here at Buccaneer camp.? Hopefully he?ll be back here shortly, soon, and we?ll get him back as a part of this, because what he means for our community, and not only our community (but) NFL history, period, is phenomenal.?
