Bucs Fans Welcome Revis to ‘Ray Jay’
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t have a first round draft selection yesterday, but it did nothing to put a damper on the spirit of Bucs fans, who gathered at Raymond James Stadium to welcome the newest member of the team, Darrelle Revis for the Bucs annual Draft Party.
In a way, it was like being drafted all over again.
“Man, it’s awesome,” said the All-Pro cornerback, who received the loudest ovation from fans when he took the field to chants of “Revis! Revis! Revis!”
“They came out to see the whole team. They didn’t just come out to see me. They came out to see everybody.”
Tampa Bay traded away its first round, 13th overall pick in exchange for Revis who is coming off an ACL injury but is still regarded as the best cornerback in the league.
“I haven’t played football since Week 3, since my injury. I got out there danced a little bit. I felt the butterflies and everything. It’s good to run out of that tunnel for the first time and actually just feel the excitement from fans.”
It was the first time fans got to see Revis in a Bucs uniform.
“I feel like Warren Moon right now, man,” he joked, referring to his number 1 jersey.
Throughout his NFL career, Revis has worn the number 24, which is second-year safety Mark Barron’s number.
There have been discussions between the two about Revis acquiring the number.
Prior to the event, Barron tweeted out that he was considering giving Revis his jersey number, and asked fans for suggestions on a new number.
“It really doesn’t matter,” Revis said in response to it. “Mark’s been here before me so it’s all up to him. We’ll see how that goes.”
Might this be the last time we seen Mark Barron wearing number 24?
Other players in attendance included safety Dashon Goldson, Tampa Bay’s first free agent acquisition of the new league year.
Goldson was joined by Revis, Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, defensive end Adrian Clayborn, running back Doug Martin, and linebacker LaVonte David.
Bucs honorary member Eric LeGrand was also in attendance.
