Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie cornerback Johnthan Banks, who was diagnosed with MRSA this week, has been cleared to play Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.
In a statement issued Saturday night, the NFL and NFL Players Association said they retained a specialist, Dr. Deverick J. Anderson of the Duke Infection Control Outreach Network, who met with the Bucs, inspected team facilities and examined Banks, determining that he “does not pose a risk of transmission to other players.”
Banks was the third Bucs player to contract the infection, which can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact via cuts and abrasions and is difficult to treat due to its resistance to common antibiotics.
Banks’ teammate, Carl Nicks, suffered a recurrence this week, while kicker Lawrence Tynes continues to receive treatment via of a PICC line. Both Nicks and Tynes were diagnosed with their infections during training camp.
In addition to meeting with the Bucs, Anderson met with Eagles team officials. Players on both teams were advised of the situation.
Neither Banks nor Nicks practiced with the team Friday and both were listed as ‘questionable’ on the team’s injury report.
