The Tampa Bay Buccaneers held the first practice of their mandatory three-day minicamp Tuesday morning. All players were in attendance except for running back/kick returner Jeff Demps, who was excused from practicing by GM Mark Dominik.
Conditions were hot hot hot, with temperatures sitting just under 90 degrees. Rain clouds moved in, however, and create some much-needed shade towards the end of the session, which lasted almost two hours.
Quarterback Josh Freeman looked sharp running the first-team offense. He hit Vincent Jackson on a nice deep ball, with Jackson finding the end zone and jokingly putting the football to his ear, pretending it was a phone.
Freeman also threw a touchdown pass to Mike Williams. With Jackson drawing the attention of most opposing defenses, Williams continues to blossom.
On defense, Dekoda Watson continues to get first-team reps at the SAM linebacker position. Head coach Greg Schiano said after practice, “[He] is, what I think, an elite special teams player in this league. Now he’s trying to become an elite linebacker.”
Safety Ahmad Black tipped a pass intended for tight end Luke Stocker, and second-year cornerback Keith Tandy nearly picked off rookie quarterback Mike Glennon.
Glennon said after practice that he’s learned the team’s playbook but is “definitely not there,” when it comes to mastering it, although he’s more comfortable than he was a month ago.
“I have a general idea of what we’re trying to accomplish on every play, but I need to get in the playbook more and have a better understanding come camp. With time and with reps, I’m sure that will come.”
