Thomas, 47, a veteran of competitive eating circuit and the first-ever champion of the event’s female division in 2011, managed to eat just 27 3/4 hot dogs, significantly lower than her 36 3/4 from last year and nowhere close to her world-record of 45 in 2012.
Sudo, a newcomer to the sport, burst onto the scene of competitive eating in April of last year when she downed 40 of Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs at the New York-New York Hotel & Casino. She followed up with an impressive 7 1/2 pounds of San Joaquin Valley deep-fried asparagus in Stockton, California.
Heading into today’s contest, Sudo was ranked fourth in the world by Major League Eating, the governing body of Nathan’s and other contests.
