BREAKING: Bucs Release Peyton Hillis, Promote Danny Noble
The Bucs have been without tight end Tom Crabtree, who is recovering from an ankle injury. Starter Luke Stocker has been limited by a hip injury. Both are listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Patriots. Noble, Nate Byham, and Tim Wright are the team's only healthy tight ends.
A former seventh-round draft pick, Hillis signed with Buccaneers this offseason but has been buried on the depth chart behind Doug Martin, Brian Leonard, and rookie Mike James.
Hillis did not participate in the season opener against the New York Jets and did not play last week against the New Orleans Saints.
He suffered a hyperextended knee in the first preseason game but managed to come back, rushing for 73 yards against the Patriots in the second preseason game.
Hillis, who once graced the cover of Madden, is best known for his 2010 season where he rushed for 1,177 yards as a member of the Cleveland Browns.
The Bucs were Hillis' fourth team in six seasons.
