A strong training camp for Bucs rookie running back Charles Sims has come to a screeching halt.

The former West Virginia and University of Houston running back is scheduled to undergo ankle surgery tomorrow on his right ankle.

Sims suffered the injury during Tuesday’s practice and on Thursday, was standing on the sideline in a walking boot.

According to Buccaneers team officials, the recovery and rehabilitation for the injury is expected to be roughly 12-14 weeks.

Head coach Lovie Smith had already ruled Sims out of Saturday’s preseason game against the Dolphins.

“Unfortunate with his ankle injury, but that happens,” Smith said of Sims after Thursday’s practice. “You know, you saw him in the cast with the walking boot outside. He won’t play in the immediate future for sure.”

Last week against Jacksonville, Sims worked with the second-team offense, finishing second on the team in both rushing and receiving with 45 all-purpose yards.

A third-round draft pick and former wide receiver, Sims was expected to not only make the 53-man roster, but to make an immediate contribution on an offense that utilizes its running backs in the short passing game.
