Braves, Tigers Try To Extend Streaks

UNDATED (AP) — The runaway train that is the Atlanta Braves will try to add to its 12-game winning streak when it continues its series with Washington tonight. The Braves’ winning ways coupled with the Nationals’ free fall has put the Braves a commanding 14 ½ games ahead in the NL East.
The Tigers have built a five-game lead over second-place Cleveland in the AL Central by dominating the Indians, winning 10 of the last 11 meetings. The Tigers take a 10-game winning streak into game three of their four-game series tonight. Doug Fister gets the start for Detroit, and if recent history is any indication, that could be bad news for Cleveland. Fister has won four straight starts to get to 10-5 this season. He’s only allowed four earned runs in 28 innings over that winning streak. Rookie righty Danny Salazar will make his second start of the season for the Indians.
St. Louis ended the Dodgers’ 15-game road winning streak last night. Losing pitcher Clayton Kershaw said after the game they’ll just have to start another one tonight. The Dodgers still have a shot at winning their fifth straight road series, with game three of the four-game set on tap in St. Louis. The NL West-leading Dodgers are 15-3 since the All-Star break. The Cardinals have won four of their last six.
Oakland’s offense has gone missing recently, as the Athletics have seen their lead in the AL West drop to one game over Texas. Oakland has lost five of six, getting shut out twice during that span. They hope that Bartolo Colon gives the offense a chance to break out when he tries for his 15th win of the season this afternoon against Cincinnati. Colon has gone at least six innings and allowed three runs or fewer in his last 15 starts, the longest streak by an Athletics pitcher since at least 1916.
Texas has won eight of nine to tighten up the division race. They Rangers are in Anaheim tonight to take on the Angels.
There are three afternoon games on the 15-game major league schedule.
