The Premier League season has barely kicked off and we may well have seen one of the biggest upsets of the season. Newly promoted Cardiff City overcame giants Manchester City 3-2 at the Liberty Stadium. It was a historic day for the Welsh side, who were celebrating their first home game in the top flight of British football since 1962. Cardiff took advantage of the absence of influential defender Vincent Kompany. Frazier Campbell pouncing on two second half corners to give Cardiff their first win of the season.
The marquee match of the weekend, Manchester United versus Chelsea, failed to live up to expectations. The two powerhouses of England had to settle for a point each as they played out the first goalless draw at Old Trafford since May 2009.
David Moyes handed a surprise start to Wayne Rooney and the England forward was United’s most dangerous player. This could be the tipping point in the Rooney transfer saga. The forward has been continually linked with a move away from Manchester United.
Liverpool have made their best start to a Premier League season for five years after they defeated Aston Villa 1-0. Daniel Sturridge was on the score sheet for the second straight week. Stretching back to last season, the former Chelsea man has scored 8 goals in his last 7 games. Aston Villa gave a good account of themselves, and their fans will be optimistic about the season to come.
Arsenal bounced back from a week one upset to Aston Villa by defeating Fulham 3-1. Arsene Wenger’s team produced a much improved performance against a solid Fulham side. Lukas Podolski provided two great finishes for Arsenal.
Tottenham maintained their 100 percent start to the season, as they beat Swansea 1-0. Roberto Soldado shot the match-winner from the penalty spot again for Spurs. The Spanish forward is helping to ease the pain of Gareth Bale’s imminent departure.
Elsewhere in the Premier League, Southampton scored late to grab a point against Sunderland. Everton were denied their first win of the season by West Brom keeper Ben Foster, who provided a string of excellent saves. The game finished in a stalemate, 0-0. Hull City hung on for a 1-0 victory, at home to Norwich. Stoke City fought back from a goal down to defeat Crystal Palace 2-1. Newcastle United and West Ham also played out a goalless draw at St. James Park.
