Liverpool continued their impressive start to the season as they recorded a 1-0 victory over bitter North-West rivals Manchester United. The Reds currently top the table after picking up their third win in a row. England forward Daniel Sturridge was again the match winner for Liverpool, heading home a corner in the third minute of play. Wayne Rooney, who was United’s most dangerous player against Chelsea last week, was unavailable for selection after picking up a head injury during training. Liverpool’s victory over the reigning champions will open the eyes of the Premier League’s big boys, as the Merseyside outfit look to improve on their seventh place finish last season.
Olivier Giroud gave Arsenal the bragging rights over fellow North London side Tottenham, as they won 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium. The French forward scored his third goal of the campaign when he tucked in a Theo Walcott cross in the 23rd minute.
The result means Tottenham have only won once at Arsenal since 1993. The victory was a perfect response for the Gunners, who have been vilified in the media because of their lack of spending over the summer. Tottenham, on the other hand, would have been hoping for better after spending approximately $160 million on new talent during the off season.
Manchester City eventually saw off a spirited Hull City 2-0 at the Etihad stadium. Last season’s runners up failed to impress, and the newly promoted side had the best chances in the first half. Manchester City did eventually take the lead through an Alvaro Negredo header. Yaya Toure added a second with a superb curling free kick in the 90th minute.
Elswhere in the Premier League, Swansea picked up their first win of the season with a 2-0 over struggling West Brom. The Baggies have had a miserable start to the season and currently sit bottom of the table. Crystal Palace also recorded their first 3 points of the season after they beat Sunderland 3-1. Hatem Ben Arfa’s late strike gave Newcastle United a 1-0 victory over West Ham United at St. James Park. Norwich beat Southampton 1-0 thanks to nineteen year old Nathan Redmond, who scored his first Premier League goal. Stoke City picked up their second win in a row as they traveled to West Ham. Cardiff City and Everton played out a hard fought stalemate at the Cardiff City Stadium.
