Manchester City embarrassed Manchester United 4-1 on Sunday, to claim bragging rights as the top team in Manchester. The Blues produced a scintillating performance against the champions, and were ahead after only 16 minutes. Sergio Aguero finished off a flowing City move down the left flank, with a superb left-footed volley.

Yaya Toure, who provided a master class performance in the middle of the park, doubled City’s advantage right before the break. Any chance of a United comeback was quelled early in the second half, as Aguero and Samir Nasri pounced to put the game out of reach for the Reds. Wayne Rooney did score a late consolation goal, but it was a case of too little too late for David Moyes’ team. The defeat means his side has failed to record a win in their three toughest matches of the season so far, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool. For Manuel Pellegrini on the other hand, the victory was a major statement of their Premier League title ambitions.

Liverpool manager Brenden Rodgers rued an “off day,” as his side suffered their first defeat of the season against Southampton at Anfield. Croatian Dejan Lovren headed home Adam Lallana’s second half corner to give the South coast squad a 1-0 win. Liverpool failed to create genuine goal scoring opportunities, and the visitors comfortably held on for their second win of the season.

Chelsea returned to winning ways with a hard fought 2-0 victory over Fulham at Stamford Bridge. Oscar broke the deadlock six minutes into the second half to ease the tension amongst the home supporters. John Obi Mikel sealed the victory with his first ever BPL goal for Chelsea. It wasn’t a vintage performance from Jose Mourinho’s team, but the win puts them back in the top four.

Everton remain the Premier League’s only unbeaten team after they twice came from behind to beat West Ham United, 3-2. Leighton Baines scored two excellent curling free kicks in the second half, and substitute Romelu Lukaku headed home the winner. Roberto Martinez’ decision to introduce the Belgian forward at half time helped turn the game in the favor of the Toffees.

Paolo Di Canio has become the Premier League’s first managerial casualty after Sunderland sacked the controversial Italian, following their 3-0 loss to West Brom on Saturday.

The 45 year old only managed 13 games for Sunderland, winning three. The Black Cats currently sit bottom of the table, and have only earned one point so far this season. Also on Saturday, Hull City overcame Newcastle United 3-2 at St James’ Park. The highly entertaining encounter was capped off with a stunning winning volley from Sone Aluko. Aston Villa beat Norwich City – the only goal scored by Libor Kozak. American goalkeeper Brad Guzan saved a penalty to secure three points for Paul Lambert’s side.

Arsenal produced a strong performance to overcome Stoke City 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium. Mesut Ozil provided all three assists, and midfielder Aaron Ramsey continued his fine form, scoring his third goal of the season. The Gunners have now won four in a row and sit joint-top of the table. Fellow table toppers, Tottenham, defeated Cardiff City 1-0 thanks to a stoppage time winner. Brazilian Paulinho was on hand to back heel an Eric Lamela cross to break the hearts of the home faithful. Swansea continued their good run of form as they swept aside Crystal Palace, 2-0. Spanish forward Michu produced another excellent performance, and opened the scoring after only 80 seconds.
