Boston Red Sox Grady Sizemore Begins Comeback

Grady Sizemore Plays In First Game In 900 Days

At one time Grady Sizemore was considered by most analyst to be among the best in baseball and certainly had a long star filled career ahead of him – then injuries hit.

Sizemore_RedSox_2014After missing just nine games from 2005 through 2009 he was limited to 106 in 2009 electing to have elbow surgery in September, then just 33 games in 2010 when he had microfracture surgery on his left knee, and just 71 games in 2011 after suffering a sports hernia.

After the 2011 season he needed surgery on his right knee. He signed to play for the Cleveland Indians in 2012 and reported to spring training but while working out  he experienced back pain.

Shortly after spring training began he underwent microdiscectomy surgery on his lower back which cost him the entire 2012 season.

Rehabbing from the injuries took both a physical and mental toll on Sizemore and he chose to sit out the 2013 season and allow his body to heal.

Today, he took the first steps back in his road to recovery by stepping in the batters box and registering two plate appearances going 0 for 2 with two flyouts. For most players getting back into the swing of things in spring training is just a continuation of the end of the season prior. For Sizemore it’s much more, it was his first plate appearances in 900 days.

He played three innings in left-field and after the game told reporters, “Obviously I want to be cautious and be aware of what I’ve gone through, but I want to give it a good effort, just to make sure everything is good.”
