Boston Can’t Seem To Solve Matt Moore
Posted By Matt Stein On October 4, 2013 @ 9:35 AM In MLB | No Comments
Left-hander Matt Moore, the Rays’ Game 1 starter for the American League Division Series, is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA against the Red Sox this year and threw the best-pitched game against the team on July 22, a two-hit complete game shutout.
The one Red Sox hitter who can boast of considerable success against Moore is David Ortiz, as he comes into Friday 6-for-13 off Moore in his career with three extra-base hits, including a home run, and no strikeouts.
It is important to note, however, that all six of Ortiz’s hits off Moore have come on fastballs, generally early in the count.
With the way Moore has carved up the rest of the Red Sox lineup — Friday’s expected starters sans Ortiz are a combined 7-for-59 (.118) off him — the lefty will probably be very careful against Boston’s designated hitter.
The key for the Red Sox success in game 1 will be to figure out early whether Moore can command his secondary pitches: if he can, the team must attack fastballs early and if not, must force him into longer, more predictable fastball counts.
