The Tampa Bay Lightning (23-12-3) lost a shootout with the Montreal Canadiens (22-14-3) Saturday night to fall by a final score of 2-1. The loss drops the Lightning to 5-2 in shootout games while the even their record in shootouts to 3-2.

Despite not playing since Saturday it was the Canadiens that seemed to find their legs and timing in the first period. If not for goalie Ben Bishop [2] the Canadiens may have jumped out to an insurmountable lead.

“It was a tough start for us,” coach Cooper said. “Our timing was off, our passes were off, everything was off. It was a good thing that [Ben] Bishop was on because that could of gotten ugly for us quickly.” Thanks to Bishop’s solid work in goal the game remained scoreless through the first period.

The Canadiens continued to exhibit more energy early into the second period drawing first blood on Tomas Plekanec [3]‘s 13th goal of the season at the 5:15 mark. The Lightning responded when Martin St. Louis [4] extended his scoring streak to six games scoring his 17th goal of the season at the 11:43 mark.  It was St. Louis’ fourth straight game with a goal one shy of his career mark of five games netting a goal.

After neither team was able to score in the third period or overtime the game moved to the shootout. Carey Price [5] stopped all Valtteri Filppula [6], Nikita Kucherov [7], and Teddy Purcell [8]. Lars Eller [9] beat Ben Bishop [2] to score the lone and deciding goal of the shootout.

After the game he told Pat Hickey [10] of the Montreal Gazette [11] that he had some insight into how to defeat Bishop, “I played with him in Peoria so I had an idea what I wanted to do. I wanted to get him moving laterally and then I cut across. I didn’t get the puck as high as I wanted to but it went in.”
