Billy Donovan Remains While Damontre Harris Leaves The Gators
Florida’s Billy Donovan spoke to the media on Thursday and said that several NBA teams have contacted him about coaching vacancies in recent days, but he’s very happy at the University of Florida and will remain with the Gators next season.
Donovan, who just finished his 18th season at Florida, would not elaborate on any teams but did discuss the team’s newest front court additions. The Gators recently added 6-foot-10 Michigan transfer Jon Horford. Jon is the brother of former Gator great Al Horford and will be eligible to play next year as a post-graduate student. Donovan commended Horford for his outstanding work ethic and understanding of what goes into winning, as well as his natural leadership qualities.
6-foot-10, 245 pound sophomore John Egbunu was also added to the Gators roster. Egbunu is a transfer from the University of South Florida and will become eligible during 2015-16, but will sit out this year per NCAA rules. He started 31 games and averaged 6.2 points and 7.4 rebounds last season for the Bulls and is expected to be a major contribution to the Gators when he is eligible to play.
Donovan also added that forward Damontre Harris’ journey with the Gators has come to an end. The 6-foot-10 big man transferred from South Carolina in 2012 following his sophomore campaign. He sat out the 2012-2013 season due to NCAA transfer rules. He was supposed to be eligible last fall, but was suspended indefinitely in December because of off-the-court issues.
After asking Donovan for a second chance and receiving one, he was reinstated at UF the beginning of spring semester. Donovan told Harris in January that he could continue on with the Gators next fall if he met “a certain set of conditions”. However, Donovan said there had been no change in Harris’ behavior and level of responsibility throughout the past few months. Therefore Harris, who didn’t play a single minute for the Gators during his two-year tenure at UF, will not return to Florida for the 2014-2015 season.
With the newest additions to the squad and Harris’ departure, the Gators have now reached their limit of 13 scholarship players on the roster.Billy Donovan Remains While Damontre Harris Leaves The Gators by Bonnie Mott
