Buffalo Bills and former Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel will miss the rest of the preseason to undergo a minor surgical procedure on his knee, the team announced this afternoon.
Manuel experienced swelling following last night’s 20-16 win over the Minnesota Vikings. He underwent an MRI Saturday morning, which revealed the need for the undisclosed procedure.
Manuel, the only quarterback taken in the first round of this year’s NFL draft, has been considered by many to be the front-runner for landing the Bills’ starting job.
Working with the second-team offense last night as part of head coach Doug Marrone’s quest for a fair and open quarterback competition, Manuel completed 10 of 12 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown.
In Manuel’s first preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts, he completed 16 of 21 passes for 107 yards a touchdown. The Bills won 44-20. Manuel finishes his abbreviated preseason completing 26 of 33 passing attempts with two touchdowns and an impressive 78.8 completion percentage.
Kevin Kolb, who started last night’s game, will get the start against the Washington Redskins next Saturday. Ironically Kolb had also been suffering from a knee injury during training camp. He missed some practice time due to the injury and the death of a relative but returned this week.
Marrone said he would evaluate Manuel and his quarterback situation after the preseason ends.
