Barcelona Announce Hiring of New Manager Luis Enrique
After going trophyless for the first time since 2007-08 and failing to reach at least the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2006-07, FC Barcelona have brought on former midfielder Luis Enrique as the club’s new manager.
The Catalan giants announced a two-year deal with Enrique just two days after failing to beat Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou, resulting in a second place La Liga finish.
Gerardo “Tata” Martino confirmed Sunday that he was leaving the club, with Barcelona confirming Monday the hiring of Enrique with a statement on the club website.
Enrique began his managerial career with the Barcelona B team, following his retirement as a player, in 2008, succeeding former-Barca manager Pep Guardiola in the role. He led the club to promotion to the Spanish second division in 2010, also earning the top spot in the playoffs the next season, although the club was ineligible for promotion.
In 2011 Enrique joined Serie A side Roma, and most recently spent a season as the manager of Celta Vigo, leading the team to a ninth place finish in his only season.
During his time as a player, Enrique earned won La Liga and the Copa del Rey twice in 207 appearances over eight seasons with Barcelona, also earning 157 caps with El Classico rivals Real Madrid.
The announcement comes on the heels of confirmation that forward Lionel Messi, the clubs all time leading goalscorer, has signed a new contract to keep him with the club. It was also followed by news that goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen will transfer from Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach.Barcelona Announce Hiring of New Manager Luis Enrique by Daniel Rogers
