Auburn Coach: Could have named score vs. FSU

The Florida State Seminoles defeated the Auburn Tigers 34-31 to win the 2013 BCS National Championship. According to Auburn’s offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee the difference in the game was consistent execution on offense.

“We could’ve executed much better and really named our score in that game, and we didn’t,” Lashlee said. “We let them hang around and we ended up losing the football game.”

AL.com [1] first reported the comments which Lashlee made while speaking at the Great Nashville Auburn Club. The Tigers led 21-3 in the game before Florida State clamped down on defense holding the Tigers scoreless on five straight possessions. The scoring drought started late in the second quarter and stretched to the 4:42 mark in the fourth quarter when Auburn’s Cody Parkey connected on a 22 yard field goal.

“From an offensive standpoint, if we would’ve executed at a higher level, there were plays here or there that maybe even the average fan doesn’t see that, if we just executed, we stay on the field on third down, or it’s not a bust and a sack or a throw-away, it’s a touchdown,” Lashlee said. “That could have blown the thing open.”

During those five possessions Auburn’s longest drive lasted five plays covering 17 yards.  Florida State finished the season with the nation’s No. 1 scoring defense allowing 12.1 points-per-game.  Auburn’s 31 points were the second most surrendered by FSU all season (Boston College scored 34).

The Seminoles struck first in the game with Roberto Aguayo’s 35 yard field goal on their first possession of the game. Auburn responded by scoring 21 unanswered points-the first time FSU had trailed since the second quarter versus Boston College in week four of the season. A late field goal before the half brought FSU within two-scores and the Seminoles dominated the second half to win the title.
