It seems far less likely that star left handed pitcher David Price will be traded by the Tampa Bay Rays. A change of plans seems to going on over the teams executive offices at Tropicana Field.
It looks a great deal like Tampa Bay is going all in to unseat the American East Champions and the World Champion Boston Red Sox.
The Rays very aggressive off season, well aggressive by their standards, which points more to the team keeping Price around and going for a World Series title in 2014.
Tampa Bay is coming off a 92 win season in 2013, a season that saw them make it to the postseason, and reach the ALCS before losing to Boston in six games. In a very busy and productive offseason, the Rays have done all they can to keep their team together. They exercised teams options on Ben Zobrist and Yunel Escobar; the team also re-signed David DeJesus and James Loney. They have had talks with last years closer Fernando Rodney while adding much needed in the bull pen with Heath Bell and on the bench with catcher Ryan Hanigan.
They still have one of baseball’s most impressive pitching staff’s and then there is that manager Joe Maddon, defense that wins games. But it has always been pitching that has been the Rays calling card and with Price, the Rays’ starting rotation consists of Matt Moore, Chris Archer, Alex Cobb, and Jeremy Hellickson. Rays starters finished third in the A.L. in ERA at 3.81. What they hope for Price to give them a full season, last year he was 10-8, 3.33, in 27 starts. He missed a month and a half in the middle of the season but returned to post a 7-3, 2.87, record after the All-Star break. A trade is still possible, but keeping Price would give the Rays the best chance at returning to the postseason and possibly advancing to the World Series.
Also if things are not going to plan the team could still trade Price in the summer or next off season. Right now it looks like the Rays see an opening and they want to be part of the post season again this time in a much bigger way.Are the Rays going all in for 2014? by James Williams
