Archer & Bats Lead To Stress Free Rays Win
Chris Archer Fans Career High Dozen Over Seven Innings
The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Texas Rangers by a final score of 10-1 to move within two games of .500 at 59-61. The win keeps the Rays 10.5 games behind the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East and six games behind the second wild card leading Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners as all three teams posted victories on Wednesday evening.
Chris Archer (8-6, 3.24 ERA) filled the role of an ace by delivering seven innings allowing just one run (earned) on four hits striking out a career high dozen batters while walking just two.
Mikolas settled down and kept the Rays off the board until the sixth inning when James Loney delivered with one of his three hits on the night an RBI single and Yunel Escobar drove in a run with a single of his own.
The Rays knocked Mikolas out of the game in the seventh inning and pushed across their final three runs on the night. Ben Zobrist delivered an RBI single, Matt Joyce sent a ground ball back to Mikolas who was unable to field the sure double play ball which allowed another run to score, and James Loney finished the scoring with his second RBI single of the night.
After Archer worked seven strong innings Joe Maddon turned to Brandon Gomes to finish the game. Gomes had been recalled earlier in the day and had not pitched in five days. There was no rust as he delivered two solid frames to give the weary Rays bullpen a full night off.
Prior to the game the Texas Rangers announced that Yu Darvish was heading to the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation. The Rays will face lefty Robbie Ross Jr. who went 2-4 with a 5.61 ERA in 18 games (9 starts) before he was optioned to the Rangers Triple-A affiliate Round Rock on June 17. Since returning to Round Rock he has posted a record of 4-4 with a 5.10 ERA in 9 games with Round Rock, including a 2.91 ERA in his last 5 starts.
The Rays will send Jake Odorizzi (8-9, 3.89) to the mound as the Rays look to take 3 out of 4 from the Rangers and finish their ten game road trip through Oakland, Chicago, and Texas with a 6-4 record.Archer & Bats Lead To Stress Free Rays Win by Steve Kinsella
