Alterraun Verner Talks About His Hamstring Injury, Teammates Stepping Up

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Alterraun Verner sat out from Monday’s training camp practice due to a hamstring injury, an ailment he’s been dealing with since the offseason, which forced him to miss minicamp. He spoke to the media after practice about the injury, as well as those who stepped up in his absence.

“It was bound to happen…nothing big, just day-to-day and we’re just going to wait and see,” Verner said of the injury.

Johnthan Banks and Mike Jenkins got the starts at cornerback. Verner praised Banks for the work he’s done as just a second-year player, and his ability to move in a defense that favors ‘quick-twitch’ players versus ‘lengthy’ frames.

“He’s a competitor, I like Johnthan. He’s a student of the game, very humble, he’s willing to learn, and he’s a big long, tall guy. To be honest, I think he moves really well in being that size, he can match up with the big guys obviously, but I’m pretty sure he can match up with the shifty guys too because of just the type of work he’s putting in. Like I said, he’s trying to get better every day, he’s a competitor and he’s not going to give up without a fight, that’s what I like about him.”

He also gives his assessment of rookie wide receiver Mike Evans after going against him.

“With him being a bigger guy, he’s gonna be more physical, you know, like a Vincent Jackson. He’s gonna get his body in the way and try to get open. It’s not really, I think for him more separation, it’s more getting into the timing, the progression so the quarterback can hit him. We want him to go get the ball. We want the ball to be in the air and for him to get it. So he doesn’t need to spend any time at the line. He just needs to get into his route and go get it.”

He added, “I’m excited for Mike. I think he’s going to put up a lot of points for this offense.”
