Alex Cobb And Rays Drubbed By Pirates 8-1

Alex Cobb Gives Up Six In 8-1 Loss

The Tampa Bay Rays were manhandled by an energetic and aggressive Pittsburgh Pirates team by a final score or 8-1. Alex Cobb took the loss falling to 2-6 on the year as the Rays record slipped to 31-47 keeping them as the major leagues worst team for the 20th day in a row.

Alex CobbEdinson Volquez improved his record to 5-6 by holding the Rays bats quiet allowing only a single first inning run on five hits striking out one and walking two in eight innings of work. Even when the Rays had baserunners against him he wasn't stressed as the Rays grounded into three double plays on the night. With the win the Pirates improve to 38-38 on the season.

Alex Cobb was not sharp allowing six runs (all earned) on six hits walking three and striking out two. It was the third time he has allowed six earned runs in seven starts since coming off the disabled list after only allowing six or more earned runs three times in his previous 57 starts.

The big blow came with the Pirates holding a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning and two runners on base and two outs. Pedro Alvarezopened the game up launching a home run to straight away center. It was his first home run since June 3rd and his first RBI in his last 14 games.

Quote To Note - Joe Maddon after the game:

They played a wonderful game tonight and I give them credit for that. The clock works on 24 hours. Lets see what happens tomorrow night. Our goal is still to win the series. It would be hard to imagine that theyre having a difficult time on defense after you saw tonight but again, we did not play our best game tonight. Weve been playing better. I would much prefer that we stay focused on the short-term goals and thats to win two out of three, win the series.

The Pirates were extremely aggressive on the bases against Alex Cobb swiping four stolen bases. Sadly the only Ray that was able to stop the Pirates was the Rays mascot Raymond:
