AFC West Over/Unders

The NFL Draft has been completed, most of the impact moves in free agency have been made months ago and the 2013 schedule is out. Perhaps most importantly, Las Vegas has weighed in and set the over/unders for each NFL team. We are going to take a look at each team, division-by-division and speculate on whether they will finish better or worse than their numbers show.

AFC West

Denver Broncos- Over/Under- 11.5 Wins

Is this bettable? It is bettable. The Denver Broncos are by far the class of the AFC West and it’s highly conceivable that they can go 6-0 in the division. The team added some help on the defensive line in the offseason with Terrance Knighton and first-round pick Sylvester Williams, and grabbed slot-machine Wes Welker from New England. With all of those upgrades the Broncos schedule has a minimum of 6 very losable games. It’s difficult to believe that Denver will win 12 games especially considering they will have some meaningless late-season affairs.

Kansas City Chiefs- Over/Under- 7.5 Wins

Is this bettable? In a word, no. Kansas City may have the most improved roster in the NFL from a season ago. Unfortunately, last season they won just two games. The Chiefs will be closer to competitive and if things break right they could challenge for a playoff spot. With a schedule that includes the always competitive NFC East with the non-competitive AFC West it’s very difficult to determine if the Chiefs will feast on their last place games (Cleveland, Buffalo) en route to .500 or lose confidence and win 5 or 6 games. If I had to bet I would bet the under but the schedule does seem very friendly.

Oakland Raiders- Over/Under- 5.5 Wins

Is this bettable? In a word, yes. One of the only sure things in the NFL over the past decade has been Oakland Raider futility. They “upgraded” the quarterback position with a player who has a grand total of two starts in Matt Flynn and everything else looks just as uncertain as any other Oakland Raider team. It seems highly unlikely that these guys can win 6 games so the under seems like a very solid wager.

San Diego Chargers- Over/Under- 7.5 Wins

Is this bettable? In a word, no. The Chargers are one of those teams that can win any game on their schedule and lose any game on their schedule. Philip Rivers is a talented quarterback and wide receiver Vincent Brown is capable of a breakout season. There’s a new head coach in Mike McCoy and new GM in Tom Telesco and nobody really knows what to expect from this team. If I was forced to bet I would pick the under, but this is a wager to stay away from.
