According to ESPN.com’s Brett McMurphy, The ACC will allow Notre Dame to join the league this summer if the Fighting Irish want to, and can, leave the Big East early.
Notre Dame was planning to move all of its sports except football from the Big East to the ACC for the 2014-2015 season.
If Notre Dame were to leave for the ACC early, this would be the last season the Fighting Irish would participate in the Big East.
The Catholic 7 schools – DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Villanova – are expected to announce soon that they plan to leave the Big East and create there own league on July 1. The schools are also reportedly buying the Big East name.
According to McMurphy, Notre Dame officials have indicated that they will seek to leave the Big East early if the Catholic 7 schools departed before 2014.
Notre Dame head basketball coach Mike Brey said he’s exhausted from considering all the scenarios regarding which conference the Fighting Irish will play in next season. He said he doesn’t want to think about it now until it’s decided.
Nearly a month after saying the Irish would stay in the Big East for another season, Brey told reporters Wednesday he doesn’t know what Notre Dame will do.
Brey said he doesn’t know if the Irish will join the Catholic 7, or go to the Atlantic Coast Conference early. The coach had said earlier he expected the No. 24 Irish to join the ACC after next season.
