UGA QB Aaron Murray

Former Plant High School standout and University of Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray won’t be participating in any drills at the NFL Scouting Combine this weekend but said his rehab is ahead of schedule and that he fully expects to be ready for his April 16 pro day.

“That’s the goal right now. I’m pretty much doing everything already, just not full, full speed. We’re continuing to build up, get stronger, get more flexible every day,” Murray said Friday in Indianapolis. “Right now we’re way ahead of schedule and it’s feeling great.”

He suffered a torn ACL in Georgia’s home finale against Kentucky. On the first play of the second quarter, a designed run, Murray said he’d heard a pop, but continued playing through it.

Thirteen plays later, a hit from defensive lineman Za’Darius Smith, in which he was spun around and knocked to the ground, was the final blow that ended his college career. He underwent surgery to repair the injury on Nov. 29 and has been rehabbing with famed orthopedic surgeon, Dr. James Andrews.

“I see Dr. Andrews pretty much about every week,” Murray said. “There’s no feeling sorry for myself. There’s no taking days off. It’s a challenge, but I always like a new challenge, and I’m facing it head on. We’re grinding every single day — no days off.”

Murray amassed a whopping 13,166 passing yards at UGA, becoming the SEC’s all-time leader in passing yards, total offense and touchdown passes. Throughout his four years as a starter, he completed over 62% percent of his passes. Those numbers and his tape from college will have to stand until he can be properly evaluated.

“I wish I could go out there and compete. I wish I could have played in the Senior Bowl. I wish I could have done everything out here this week but it’s a process. I’ve got to trust in the recovery, I’ve got to trust in my doctors and know that I’m getting better and getting stronger.”
