Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez is being charged with the murder of 27-year-old semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd.

Hernandez walked into Attleboro District Court for his arraignment just after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, his face blank and expressionless as charges were read out loud and evidence piled against him.

He faces first-degree murder and five gun-related charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm, two counts of possession of a large capacity firearm, and two counts of possession of a firearm without an ID card.

Requests for bail by his attorney, Michael Fee, were denied.

Several members of Lloyd’s family were present at Hernandez’ arraignment. At one point, two had become so grief-stricken that they had to leave the courtroom.

Lloyd, who was friends with Hernandez and dating his fiancé’s sister, was last seen with him on June 17 at approximately 2:30 a.m. Hernandez was one of three men who came to pick Lloyd up from his home.

Police used a warrant to obtain footage from Hernandez’ home surveillance. According to first district attorney Bill McCauley, the footage shows Hernandez leaving his home with a gun, prior to picking up Lloyd.

At one point after Hernandez picked him up, Lloyd texted his sister with, “Did you see who I am with [2]?” When she asked who, he answered with “NFL,” followed by, “Just so you know.”

Lloyd’s slain body was discovered by a jogger in an industrial area a half-mile from Hernandez’ home at 5:30 p.m. According to McCauley, Lloyd had multiple gun shot wounds to the chest and back. Authorities recovered five .45 caliber shells from a semi-automatic weapon.

The two had reportedly gotten into a scuffle at a night club three days earlier.

Hernandez was taken into police custody just before 9 a.m. Wednesday. The team announced his release at 10:20 a.m.

He will have a probable cause hearing on July 24.
