A Look At Upcoming Rays Roster Decisions
On Thursday afternoon the Rays signed designated hitter Delmon Young to a minor league contract and he will report to Double A Montgomery. He has been working on his swing in Arizona and will get some live game action with the Biscuits. How much? That has yet to be determined
Andrew Friedman says that Delmon Young will add depth to the roster, “He’s another right-handed-hitting option that we will potentially have available to us for the stretch run. It’s way too early to predict all the roster changes that we’ll have between now and the end of the season. I just know that we’re better prepared today with Delmon as an option for us.”
Once Young is ready to be activated space on both the 40-man roster and 25 man roster will have to be made. Not only will a 40-man roster move be required for Young a second move will be required to accommodate Jesse Crain.
Crain was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 25-man roster for Alex Cobb who was on the 60-day disabled list.
The Rays also claimed outfielder David Dejesus on waivers from the Washington Nationals. The Rays and Nationals have 47-hours to work out a trade or the Nationals could either pull him off waivers or allow the Rays to take him and the approximate $2.5M commitment.
Finally, Matt Moore is progressing nicely and is close to a return to the squad. If he returns before September 1st a 25-man roster move will be required.
Odds are the Rays will allow Roberto Hernandez to start Tuesday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels at Tropicana Field. The next time Hernandez’s spot comes up in the rotation will be Sunday night which is also September 1st the day the rosters expand and Moore can be added to the roster without a corresponding move.
The David DeJesus situation will be settled prior to Tuesday and if the Rays were to acquire him Jason Bourgeois would be most likely to be designated for assignment to create room on both the 40-man roster and the 25-man. (August Waiver Process Explained By MLBTRaderumors)
When Jesse Crain is ready to be activated one susceptible player on the 40-man is reliever Jeff Beliveau. He is a 26-year old left handed reliever who is having a good year in Triple-A. On the season he has appeared in 37 games with a record of 2-3 with an ERA of 2.66 and has 75 strike outs (walking 21) in just 44 innings.
The Rays could also place Alex Colome on the 60-day disabled list (elbow) thus clearing a roster spot on the 40-man roster.
There are a trio of young pitchers on the 40-man roster that could be designated for assignment but it would be highly improbable that any move is made involving any of them.
Frank De Los Santos is a left hander reliever pitching in Triple-A Durham and is 1-1 with a 4.85 ERA on the year. Felipe Rivero is a 22 year old left handed starter who is pitching for the High A Charlotte Stone Crabs where he is 8-7 with a 3.68 ERA. Enny Romero is a 22 year old left handed starting pitcher who has progressed to Double A Montgomery and is 11-6 with a 2.56 ERA.
