8/15 Buccaneer Training Camp Notes and Quotes
Several notable Buccaneers were present on the practice field Monday evening at One Buc Place. WR Arrelious Benn, FB Erik Lorig, TE Kellen Winslow, and DT Gerald McCoy, were all on the practice field and participants in the padded practice. McCoy flashed the strength and speed during offensive/defensive line one-on-one drills, beating his man with child-like ease.
Defensive line coach Keith Millard says the presence of McCoy takes the Buccaneer defensive line to a different level.
“With his athleticism, his explosiveness, his ability to make plays, he just takes us up another notch without a doubt,” Millard. “It’s a different line when he’s not in there. We’ve still got good guys in there. We play a little bit different. He gives us a little bit more speed and edge ability. He wasn’t in there last week and we did a pretty good job without him, but we’re really happy to get him back.”
McCoy wasn’t the only defensive lineman to show some ability on Monday. Adrian Clayborn looked fast and physical against his linemate, sporting a good counter move and change of direction to get past his man. EJ Wilson, who logged time at defensive tackle against the Chiefs, also fared well in one-on-ones, using a bull rush to dominate his blocker.
Newly-acquired CB Ashton Youboty participated in his first practice as a Buccaneer. Youboty, who spent the last five seasons with the Buffalo Bills, is working to get up to speed and on the field as quickly as possible.
“The sooner the better,” Youboty said. “I’ve already got a grasp of the base concepts. Pick up the nickel as time goes by and see what happens.”
Defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake says Youboty is a guy he’s had his eye on for years.
“I’m very familiar with him,” Lake said. “I (saw) him when he was coming out of college in 2006. I liked him coming out of Ohio State. I watched him from afar through his pro career. A talented guy like that is on the street with no job, and we have the opportunity to pick him up, we’re going to pick him up.”
The Bucs have an afternoon practice tomorrow that is closed to the public before facing the New England Patriots Thursday at Raymond James Stadium in the team’s preseason home opener. Kickoff is set for at 7:30 pm.8/15 Buccaneer Training Camp Notes and Quotes by Sports Talk Florida
