Warriors Trying To Make Room For Howard
The Golden State Warriors were considered the underdogs going into the week of meetings with star free-agent center Dwight Howard. On July 2, the last day of meetings, the Warriors were listed at 10-1 to land the mercurial big man. But indications trickled out after their meeting with Howard that the Warriors managed to make enough of an impact to give Howard pause, particularly with coach Mark Jackson’s predictably motivational talk.
Now comes word from ESPN that the Warriors have begun discussions to clear cap space in the event that Howard chooses them as his next team.
Sources say that the Warriors, in an effort to manufacture some financial flexibility to help their chances, have begun calling teams with salary-cap space to try to entice them to take expiring contracts off their books so they can clear a $20-million hole for Howard.
