49ers Sign Former Bucs CB Eric Wright Nearly 3 Weeks After Failed Physical

In a bizarre twist of events in the month of July, that included a DUI arrest, a failed physical, and a voided trade, Eric Wright can now say he is officially a San Francisco 49er.

The team signed him to a one-year deal this afternoon.

The former Bucs cornerback was traded to the 49ers last month in exchange for a conditional draft choice in 2014.

But the trade was nullified when Wright failed a physical with the 49ers. Reasons for the failed physical were not made public, but the team did indicate possible interest down the road.

Wright was sent back to Tampa Bay and subsequently released.

At the time, there were questions if Wright’s DUI arrest on July 12, which became public within days of the transaction, factored into his failed physical.

After the trade, however, the 49ers continued to keep tabs on Wright’s health.

At that time, the 49ers didn’t have a dire need at cornerback. Then Chris Culliver tore his ACL last week and was officially ruled out for the season.

The status of Wright’s health and well-being is still to-be-determined.

He has been placed on the Non-Football Injury/Illness List. The team provided a vague explanation.

“Eric is currently tending to a personal matter and he will join the team as soon as possible,” said general manager Trent Baalke.
