TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Philip Cofer, a four-star recruit and the No. 56 overall high school basketball prospect in the nation according to ESPN, has signed a Grant-In-Aid to attend Florida State University and play basketball for head coach Leonard Hamilton and his staff.  Cofer averaged a double-double of 19.3 points and 12.8 rebounds to go along with three blocked shots in 24 games as a senior at Whitewater High School in Fayetteville, Ga.

The Seminoles are the third winningest program in the ACC in the last nine seasons and have played in the NCAA Tournament four times since 2009.

“We are excited to add Phil to our roster,” said head coach Leonard Hamilton.  “He is a strong player who allows us to become a better team.  His athleticism, his motor and his ability to score and rebound the basketball will allow him to be successful in our system.  Phil fits in well with our players and we are looking forward to getting him on campus so he can begin to help us prepare for the upcoming season.”

As a senior, Cofer led Whitewater to an 18-10 record and to a berth in the Georgia High School Scholastic Association Class AAAAA state tournament. He scored his senior season high of 35 points in a win over South Cobb, scored at least 20 points  nine times and scored in double figures in 23 of 24 games.  Cofer totaled his season high of 19 rebounds in a win over Landmark Christian, pulled down at least 15 rebounds in six different games and recorded double figures rebounds in 21 of 24 games.  He totaled 19 double-doubles in points and rebounds in his 24 games as a senior.

He averaged a near double-double of 16.7 points and 8.9 rebounds as a junior and scored his season high of 42 points in a win over Landmark Christian.  He scored 20 points or more seven times as a junior including his 42-point outing and a 30-point scoring game in a victory over Northgate High School.

“My desire to work with Coach Hamilton and his staff is a big reason why I am going to play at Florida State,” said Phil Cofer.  “Coach Hamilton and his staff have helped players at my position improve during their careers; the progress the players before me at Florida State have made has allowed them to become really good players.  I really like the system and think I can flourish at Florida State.  I am really excited to get down there and get started with summer workouts.

Philip’s father, Michael, played football at the University of Tennessee and then in the NFL after being drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1983.  He played 10 seasons in the NFL, all with the Lions and was named to the Pro Bowl in 1988 after earning 12 sacks, Cofer led the Lions in Sacks each season from 1987 through 1990.  He was a standout at both linebacker and defensive end for the Lions.

“We looked at the position, how he would be utilized at the position and he was happy with that,” said Mike Cofer.  “Coach Hamilton sat him down and explained how his skill set would be utilized, how they would work with his strengths and improve his weaknesses and how Phil could, if he works hard and stays focused, would come in and play at Florida State.  He felt comfortable with the coaching staff and he felt comfortable with the players he had the opportunity to meet.  The team already has unbelievable size and Phil really liked that.  He was happy with personnel on the roster, he was happy with the campus and he was very impressed with the academic ideals of the university.”

Cofer will join the Seminoles program for the upcoming year when the ACC adds Louisville to what is already being considered the best conference in college basketball history.  Florida State finished with a 22-14 record and advanced to the semifinals of the NIT after defeating two ranked teams during the regular 2013-13 regular season.
