30 Prospects In 30 Days: SS Nick Gordon

In this edition of 30 Prospects in 30 Days, we focus on shortstop Nick Gordon, a 6’2″, 170 lb senior at Olympia High School in Orlando, Florida.

Scouting Grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 40 | Run: 60 | Arm: 60 | Field: 60 | Overall: 60

Nick_GordonGordon is talented enough to follow in the footsteps of either his father Tom, a former All-Star pitcher, or his brother Dee, an infielder with the Dodgers.

Gordon has not always been an infielder, though, as he has plenty of experience on the mound as well. He even impressed some scouts during last summer’s showcase circuit, throwing a low-90s fastball and a good curveball, but he prefers to play every day and has pitched only sparingly this spring.

A few scouts even believe Gordon could be a viable option on the mound, and that could always be a fallback option for the hard-throwing right-hander, but as of now it appears both Gordon and the majority of scouts believe he is better served at short.

As far as his offensive game is concerned, he possesses a good line drive swing for a left-hander and has shown a willingness to hit the ball the other way this season.

His power isn’t what he’s known for, but he does have some pop for his frame even if his power game is entirely pull-oriented. Gordon has the potential to be a double-digit home run hitter in the big leagues.

Gordon has only played one season on his high school’s varsity squad, but he has 5 home runs and a .508 AVG in 74 plate appearances this season.

Gordon’s glove, on the other hand, is his calling card, as he has a plus-plus arm and some of the softest hands and best range of any player in the draft.

Overall, in a draft class that’s weak on shortstops, Gordon seems to have established himself as one of the best, and seems like a lock to be an early first-round pick.

Tune in tomorrow at 6pm ET for the next edition of 30 Prospects in 30 Days: RHP Tyler Beede.
