30 Prospects In 30 Days: SS Jacob Gatewood

In this edition of 30 Prospects in 30 Days, we focus on shortstop Jacob Gatewood, a 6’5″, 180 lb senior at Clovis High School in California.

Scouting Grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 65 | Run: 45 | Arm: 60 | Field: 45 | Overall: 55

Jacob GatewoodGatewood made a name for himself on the national stage last summer, winning the junior portion of the All-Star Game Home Run Derby by bashing 13 homers with a metal bat at Citi Field in July.

A month later, he went on to win the Home Run Derby at the Under Armour All-America Game at Wrigley Field.

Gatewood has tremendous power and bat speed, not to mention quality athleticism and arm strength.

If he realizes his full potential, he should turn into one of the game’s most powerful shortstops, as he has the ability to develop into an annual 30-homer hitter as a big league shortstop.

Whether he realizes that upside depends on how much he develops at the plate and how much weight he’ll add on, as his lean 6-foot-5 frame is one thing that concerns scouts.

This past season, his first and only at the varsity level, he hit .349 with 2 HR’s and a .627 SLG% in 14 games played.

Gatewood definitely has the arm to remain at shortstop, but his speed and defense are sometimes considered average, which could eventually lead to a move to third base.

Overall, if he can learn to control his swing and prevent it from getting long and prone to swinging and missing at time, he can become a very productive shortstop in the Major Leagues.

Tune in tomorrow at 6pm ET for the next edition of 30 Prospects in 30 Days: OF Monte Harrison.
