30 Prospects In 30 Days: RHP Tyler Beede
In this edition of 30 Prospects in 30 Days, we focus on right-hander Tyler Beede, a 6’4″, 215 lb junior at Vanderbilt University.
Scouting Grades: Fastball: 65 | Curveball: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 60
Beede figures to become just the 18th player selected in the first round of two different June Drafts.
He was picked 21st overall by the Blue Jays out of a Massachusetts high school in 2011, though he opted to attend Vanderbilt instead.
Beede, with Vanderbilt, led NCAA Division I with a school-record 14 victories and was one of three finalists for the Golden Spikes Award last spring.
In three years total at Vanderbilt, Beede has thrown 242 innings with a 3.24 ERA.
When he is at his best, he can display three above-average pitches. His fastball usually operates around 92-94 mph and can clock as high as 97.
His curveball is sharp and sits in the low 80’s with plenty of depth , but it is his most inconsistent offerring as he has trouble commanding it at times.
His changeup also arrives in the low 80s, and can play off his fastball well though it is not as effective as his curve.
The biggest question with Beede is whether he’ll be able to harness his quality stuff, as his delivery can get out of sync at times. He can be unhittable but he has to find the strike zone consistently in order to fully harness his potential.
Tune in tomorrow at 6pm ET for the next edition of 30 Prospects in 30 Days: RHP Jeff Hoffman.
