30 Prospects In 30 Days: OF Michael Conforto

In this edition of 30 Prospects in 30 Days, we focus on outfielder Michael Conforto, a 6’2″, 217 lb junior at Oregon State University.
Scouting Grades: Hit: 60 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 55
Conforto has athletic bloodlines, as his father Mike was a Penn State linebacker and his mother Tracie (Ruiz) won two gold medals in synchronized swimming at the 1984 Olympics.
He considered a college football career like his dad but made a wise choice in choosing to play baseball.
He was the Pacific-12 Conference’s Freshman of the Year in 2012 and Player of the Year in 2013, when he led Oregon State to the College World Series.
Conforto’s best tool is his power, as he has the ability to be a 25-plus home run guy in the Major Leagues.
He has a big uppercut swing, which allows him to turn hard hit line drives into homers, but the downside to this is that he swings and misses too much to hit for a high average.
He does, however, take his walks when pitchers try to work around him.
Other than his power, he’s a left fielder with subpar speed, range and arm strength.
Because of this, Conforto should eventually move to first base, where his bat will play better.
Though Conforto’s power ability should get him drafted in the first round, a team is going to have to draft him based on that tool alone.
Tune in tomorrow at 6pm ET for the next edition of 30 Prospects in 30 Days: 3B Michael Chavis.
