30 Prospects In 30 Days: RHP Luke Weaver

In this edition of 30 Prospects in 30 Days, we focus on right-hander Luke Weaver, a 6’2″, 170 lb junior at Florida State University.

Scouting Grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 60 | Control: 60 | Overall: 55

Luke_WeaverWeaver made a huge jump from his freshman to his sophomore year at Florida State, progressing towards becoming a staff ace who earned MVP honors at the Tallahassee Regional with a 14-strikeout performance.

With his performance the following summer and this spring, his stuff, and his track record, he should be drafted in the first round of this year’s draft.

In three years with FSU, Weaver has thrown 240 innings with a 3.07 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and a strikeout per inning pitched. He also has over 4 strikeouts for every walk he’s allowed over that span.

Weaver has a quick arm that produces fastballs sometimes reaching 97 mph, but he usually sits around 92-93 with the pitch.

His deceptive low-80s changeup is his best secondary offering, and though the pitch doesn’t have a lot of movement he is able to throw it with good arm speed.

The biggest questions about Weaver are his breaking ball and his size. His curveball is more of a slurve that sits in the upper-70s but it may never become more than an average slider.

He doesn’t have a large frame either, at just 6-foot-2 and 170 pounds, and there is some speculation about how high his ceiling is.

Some scouts believe Weaver can become a No. 2 starter in the big leagues and others believe he’s nothing more than a reliever.

Tune in tomorrow at 6pm ET for the next edition of 30 Prospects in 30 Days: OF Derek Hill
