30 Prospects In 30 Days: RHP Luis Ortiz

In this edition of 30 Prospects in 30 Days, we focus on right-hander Derek Hill, a 6’2″, 190 lb senior at Sanger High School In California.

Scouting Grades: Fastball: 65 | Slider: 60 | Curveball: 45 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 50

Luis_OrtizOrtiz was named MVP of the 18-and-under World Cup in Taiwan in September, helping Team USA win the gold medal by collecting a win and three saves in five appearances.

He even struck out the side in the ninth inning to close out the championship game over Japan.

When healthy, Ortiz effortlessly throws his fastball in the 92-95 mph range and tops out around 97.

His slider is his best secondary offering, as it sits in the low 80’s and gets plenty of swings and misses. He also has shown the ability to use the pitch to get ahead of hitters.

Ortiz, a Fresno State recruit, also throws a changeup, but right now there is not enough of a difference in velocity between his changeup and his fastball and the pitch almost acts like a cutter.

He has also started working on a curveball to give hitters a different look.

Ortiz has also shown confidence in his stuff and his ability and is able to throw all of his pitches for strikes.

A forearm issue kept Ortiz off the mound for about three weeks and raised some concerns among scouts, but he seems to be ok moving forward.

There’s not a lot of projection remaining in his already-mature frame, but he still has the potential to miss enough bats and throw strikes often enough to become a No. 2 starter in the big leagues, with a back-end starter possibly being a low-end projection.

Tune in tomorrow at 6pm ET for the next edition of 30 Prospects in 30 Days: LHP Foster Griffin
