30 Prospects In 30 Days: LHP Foster Griffin
In this edition of 30 Prospects in 30 Days, we focus on left-hander Foster Griffin, a 6’5″, 190 lb senior at First Academy High School in Florida.
Scouting Grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 45 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 50 | Overall: 50
At the National High School Invitational at the USA Baseball complex in March, Griffin put himself on the map by throwing a three-hit shutout and giving First Academy the championship.
Griffin is an advanced left-hander who shows a good feel for his three-pitch arsenal.
Though he has played at the varsity level since his sophomore year, he has only pitched at the level since his junior year and owns a 1.56 ERA with 149 strikeouts in 94 innings since then.
He can also handle the bat, though, as he owns a .381 AVG and a .611 SLG% in three seasons on the varsity squad.
He throws his fastball in the low 90s with good natural run. His fastball might not pack the most punch but he is able to get some deception on the pitch.
His changeup is his best secondary offering, as he throws it for strikes and good arm speed and is able to get hitters to chase it.
Griffin also throws a slider, which he can also throw for strikes, but he can sometimes struggle to locate and get on top of the pitch.
Overall, Griffin is a good athlete and has the kind of strong pitcher’s body scouts seek. He has a ceiling as a No. 3 starter and a floor of being a lefty specialist out of the pen.
Tune in tomorrow at 6pm ET for the LAST (sad, I know) edition of 30 Prospects in 30 Days: 1B A.J. Reed
