This junior running back from Oregon has forced his way onto the field since the first day he started with the Ducks. At 5’9” and 176 pounds, Thomas has been a weapon of threat that Oregon’s coaching staff have found ways to utilize.
Thomas may be undersized for a runner but he is still projected to be selected in the 7th round. He is the No. 20-rated running back prospect for 2014.
He made his announcement official just days before the cutoff for underclassmen to declare, which is January 15th.
Thomas will need to improve on some things in order to make an NFL roster. One key improvement to be made will be his versatility. He lacks the size to contribute out of the backfield, but he is explosive in the return game.
He was one of the most feared running backs in the country over the past two seasons, despite his injuries in 2013. Thomas did most of his damage by taking short passes and creating yards after the catch.
NFL critics say that he lacks bulk that makes it difficult to evaluate his role in the NFL.
There seems to be a new emphasis on playmakers in the NFL, making it challenging for average college players to really make it in the pros.
But, Thomas’ combination of agility and acceleration could aid in the demand for a player like him and ultimately help him to be selected earlier than some are predicting.
