[1]MORNING STANLEY CUP OF JOE – MAY 17, 2013

BOSTON 3, NY RANGERS 2 (OT); BOS leads 1-0
Brad Marchand scored the game-winning goal 15:40 into the extra frame and Tuukka Rask made 33 saves as the Bruins improved to 3-0 in overtime games this postseason.

LOS ANGELES 4, SAN JOSE 3; LA leads 2-0
Dustin Brown and Trevor Lewis scored power-play goals 22 seconds apart in the final two minutes of regulation to help the Kings overcome a 3-2 deficit and take a 2-0 series lead.

NO LEAD IS SAFE
The Bruins and Kings both overcame third-period deficits to win Thursday. Twenty-four of the 52 games this postseason (46.2%) have been won by clubs that had trailed in the contest, including 12 by teams that were down in the third period (23.1%).

HOME SWEET HOME
Home teams improved to 35-17 (.673) in the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs, including a 5-0 record in the second round. The last time home teams had a winning percentage of .600 or higher during the NHL postseason was in 1993, when they went 52-33 (.612).

KINGS LOVE L.A.
The Kings won their fifth consecutive home playoff game, extending their franchise record. They also won their 12th straight at STAPLES Center dating to the regular season, tying the club mark set Oct. 10-Dec. 5, 1992.

CLOSE CALLS
Thirty of the first 52 games this postseason (57.7%) have featured one-goal margins.

Twenty of the last 25 meetings between the Rangers and Bruins (regular season and playoffs) have been decided by one goal. Three of their four games this year (regular season and playoffs) have required overtime.

BIG Z
Boston defenseman Zdeno Chara, who logged 38:02 of ice time, scored the game-opening goal, assisted on the overtime winner and recorded nine shots on goal. He is only the third defenseman since 1999 to score a goal and register at least nine shots on goal in a playoff game, joining Boston’s Ray Bourque (one goal, 10 shots in a double-overtime victory against the Hurricanes in 1999) and Ottawa’s Erik Karlsson (one goal, 10 shots in an overtime win versus the Rangers last year). (Elias)

Chara has 2-7—9 during a five-game point streak. He leads all defensemen with eight assists and 10 points in eight games this postseason.

BIG DEBUT
Playing in his first postseason game, rookie defenseman Torey Krug scored the game-tying goal for Boston in the third period. Krug is only the second Bruin in the last eight playoff years to score in his first postseason game; Tyler Seguin also did so in Game 1 of the 2011 Eastern Conference Final against Tampa Bay. Krug is the first Boston defenseman to score in his playoff debut since Glen Wesley in 1988 against Buffalo. (Elias)

MORE FIRSTS
San Jose defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic scored his first career playoff goal in his 74th postseason game. NY Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh scored his first in his 33rd career playoff game.

POINTING THE WAY
NY Rangers forward Derick Brassard picked up an assist to extend his point streak to six games (2-8—10). The last Ranger to have a point streak of six games or more in a single postseason was Wayne Gretzky, who registered 6-8—14 during a nine-game streak in 1997. (Elias)

A LONG TIME COMING
The Rangers and Bruins haven’t met in the postseason since 1973 – the 40-year gap is the longest between playoff meetings in NHL history. (Elias)

Boston forward Jaromir Jagr (Feb. 15, 1972) is the only player on either team’s roster who was born when the Rangers and Bruins last met in the postseason.

The last playoff overtime game between the Rangers and Bruins was on March 27, 1958, when Jerry Toppazzini scored the game-winner for Boston.

DID YOU KNOW?
The Kings’ comeback marked the 11th game this postseason in which a game-tying or go-ahead goal was scored in the final five minutes of regulation.

LOOSE PUCKS
NY Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist made 45 saves, including 15 after regulation, but fell to 3-11 in overtime games during his playoff career . . . San Jose forward Scott Gomez collected two assists to eclipse the 100-point plateau in his postseason career. He ranks eighth among active players with 29-72—101 in 144 career playoff games . . . Los Angeles forward Jeff Carter scored the team’s first goal of the game and has 4-2—6 in his past five contests . . . San Jose defenseman Brad Stuart (1-1—2) recorded his first multi-point playoff game since April 23, 2009 . . . The NHL announced that forwards Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks, Matt Moulson of the New York Islanders and Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay Lightning are the three finalists for the 2012-13 Lady Byng Memorial Trophy . . . The Department of Player Safety announced that San Jose Sharks forward Raffi Torres has been suspended for the remainder of the Western Conference Semifinals for an illegal hit to the head of Los Angeles Kings forward Jarret Stoll during Game 1.
