2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs News And Notes

MORNING STANLEY CUP OF JOE – MAY 19, 2013
SATURDAY’S RESULT

RED WINGS 4, BLACKHAWKS 1; Series tied 1-1
The Red Wings scored four unanswered goals after the Blackhawks took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission en route to a 4-1 victory. Captain Henrik Zetterberg led Detroit with two assists, including one on Brendan Smith’s game-winning goal.

SHARKS 2, KINGS 1 (OT); LA leads series 2-1
Logan Couture returned from a second period injury to score the overtime winner, a power-play goal at 1:29 of the extra frame, to give the Sharks a 2-1 win. Antti Niemi made 26 saves in the victory.

A STAR IS BORN
Detroit defenseman Brendan Smith scored the game-winning goal, at 16:08 of the second period. It was his first career road goal and also his first NHL game-winning goal. It was his second goal in nine games this postseason; prior to the playoffs, he had scored one goal in 48 career regular season games.

Three of the Red Wings five game-winning goals this postseason have come from players scoring their first ever playoff game-winner (Damien Brunner, Gustav Nyquist).

HELP FROM THE BACK END
In addition to Smith’s game-winner, defensemen Jakub Kindl, Jonathan Ericsson and Niklas Kronwall each recorded an assist for Detroit. It was the first time that the Red Wings had four different defensemen register points in the same playoff game since Game 5 of Detroit’s second-round series in 2011 against San Jose (Ericsson, Kronwall, Nicklas Lidstrom and Brad Stuart). Three other teams have had four defensemen record points in one game in the 2013 playoffs: the Senators (Game 3 vs. Montreal), Capitals (Game 3 vs. the Rangers) and Islanders (Game 4 vs. Pittsburgh). (Elias)

LOGAN’S HEROES
Logan Couture’s first career playoff overtime goal was the fifth overtime power-play goal in the 2013 postseason, setting a new NHL record for one playoff year. There were four overtime power-play goals scored in the 1996, 2003 and 2008 playoffs. Detroit’s Gustav Nyquist, Washington’s Mike Green, Pittsburgh’s Chris Kunitz and San Jose’s Patrick Marleau have also scored playoff overtime power-play goals this year. (Elias)

DID YOU KNOW?
The San Jose Sharks have now won four consecutive playoff overtime games against Los Angeles and nine of their last 10 overall dating back to the 2011 postseason — the Sharks won three overtime games against the Kings in their 2011 first-round match-up. San Jose’s last overtime loss came in Game 5 of the 2011 Western Conference Final against Vancouver.

KANE LIGHTS THE LAMP
Patrick Kane scored his first goal of the playoffs, ending his streak of 14 playoff games without a goal (Elias). Kane, who has seven points (1-6–7) through seven games this postseason, has 59 points (21-38–59) in 58 career playoff games.

FRESH LEGS
Los Angeles Kings forward Tanner Pearson, selected 30th overall in 2012, made his NHL debut. Pearson, who originally went undrafted in 2011, becomes just the third player in Kings history to make his NHL debut in the postseason. New York Islanders Brock Nelson (selected 30th overall in 2010) and Washington’s Tom Wilson (selected 16th overall in 2012) also made their NHL debut during the 2013 playoffs.

LOOSE PUCKS
Patrick Sharp extended his playoff point streak to six games. (6 goals, 4 assists)… The Blackhawks killed off four Red Wing power-plays and remain a perfect 24 for 24 while shorthanded this postseason…This was the first time Detroit defeated Chicago this season after the Blackhawks had won the first six games head-to-head (regular season and playoffs)… Henrik Zetterberg has multi-point games in four of his last five outings…The Blackhawks 20 shots on net was their fewest total in a playoff game since April 27, 2009… Dan Boyle became the Sharks all-time leading playoff goal scorer among defensemen with ten… Tyler Toffoli scored his first NHL playoff goal.
