MORNING STANLEY CUP OF JOE – MAY 18, 2013
PITTSBURGH 4, OTTAWA 3; PIT leads 2-0
Captain Sidney Crosby led the way, with his second career playoff hat trick, and Brenden Morrow tallied his first of the playoffs, and first postseason goal since May 14, 2008 (with Dallas), to secure the win for Pittsburgh.
THE SID SHOW
Sidney Crosby’s first goal of the game was the 100th point of his postseason career. It was his 75th playoff game making Crosby the fourth fastest to hit the century mark in the postseason: Wayne Gretzky (46 games), Mario Lemieux (50), Jari Kurri (67) and Mike Bossy (74).
Crosby is the third player with a hat trick in the same game in which he recorded his 100th career postseason point: the others were Detroit’s Dino Ciccarelli on May 11, 1995, and the Islanders’ Mike Bossy on April 10, 1983. (Elias)
MOVING UP THE CHARTS
Crosby’s second goal of the game moved him past Ron Francis into fourth place on Pittsburgh’s all-time playoff scoring list (102 points in 75 games). The top three playoff scorers in franchise history are: Mario Lemieux (172 points in 107 games), Jaromir Jagr (147 points in 140 games) and Kevin Stevens (106 points in 103 games).
MALKIN MAKES IT HAPPEN
Evgeni Malkin assisted on Crosby’s third goal to give him an assist in all eight games this postseason. Only three other players in League history have recorded at least one assist in each of his team’s first eight games of a postseason: Fleming Mackell (1957–58 Bruins – 8 games), Bobby Orr (1971–72 Bruins – 11 games) and Joe Sakic (1996–97 Avalanche – 8 games). (Elias)
CALL TO DUTY
Robin Lehner made his Stanley Cup playoff debut when he replaced Craig Anderson at 1:15 of the second period. He allowed one goal on 21 shots in 38:03 of relief; his first game action since April 28.
In 2011, Lehner led the Binghamton Senators to the Calder Cup championship and was named the most valuable player of the AHL playoffs, finishing 14-4 with a 2.10 goals-against average, a .939 save percentage, and three shutouts in 19 appearances.
2-0 SERIES STATS
Pittsburgh is up 2-0 in a series for the first time since sweeping the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2009 Eastern Conference Final. The Penguins have won six straight series when leading 2-0 and have a 12-2 record when winning the first two games in a best-of-seven series. Ottawa has never rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win a series (0-7). (Elias)
Tomas Vokoun denied Cory Conacher and Colin Greening on breakaways to preserve a two-goal lead… Robin Lehner showed he belongs in the playoffs with this cross-crease save on Jarome Iginla… The Penguins are the highest-scoring team this postseason, scoring 33 goals through eight games (4.13 per game)… Pittsburgh’s fourth straight playoff win is their first such streak since winning five in a row May 13-26, 2009… Pascal Dupuis was held pointless for the first time this postseason, ending his playoff career-high point streak at seven games… The NHL announced that Bruce Boudreau of the Anaheim Ducks, Paul MacLean of the Ottawa Senators and Joel Quenneville of the Chicago Blackhawks are the three finalists for the 2012-13 Jack Adams Award.
