MORNING STANLEY CUP OF JOE – MAY 28, 2013
CHICAGO 4, DETROIT 3; series tied 3-3
Trailing 2-1 entering the third period, the Blackhawks scored three consecutive goals – including Michael Frolik’s game-winner on a penalty shot – to force a Game 7 Wednesday in Chicago.
Chicago is the 49th team in NHL history to force a Game 7 in a series in which it trailed 3-1. Of those teams, 24 have gone on to win Game 7 (.500). The Blackhawks only have forced one other Game 7 in franchise history after trailing a series 3-1 – they did so in the 2011 Western Conference Quarterfinals, which they eventually lost to the Canucks. POSTSEASON PENALTY SHOTS
Michael Frolik scored on the first penalty shot of the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs, marking the first successful penalty shot for any team in the postseason since Frolik scored in Game 6 of the 2011 Western Conference Quarterfinals versus the Canucks. The last time a penalty-shot goal stood as the game-winner in a playoff game was on April 24, 2002, when Shawn Bates scored in the Islanders’ Game 4 victory over the Maple Leafs in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. FROLIK MAKES HISTORY
With his goal Monday, Michael Frolik became the first player in NHL history to record two penalty-shot goals in the postseason. Frolik’s tally against the Red Wings also marked the first penalty-shot goal that served as a game-winner for a team facing elimination. (Elias)
Michael Frolik’s penalty-shot goal in the 2011 Western Conference Quarterfinals tied Game 6 in the third period before the Blackhawks eventually won in overtime – that was the only previous series in which Chicago forced a Game 7 after trailing 3-1.
OFF THE SCHNEID
The Blackhawks scored their first road power-play goal of the postseason (1-for-16, 6.2%), snapping an 11-game road drought (regular season and playoffs) that dated to March 31.
COACH Q MOVES UP
Chicago head coach Joel Quenneville recorded his 79th career postseason victory to move into sole possession of eighth place on the all-time playoff wins list, ahead of Pat Burns and Detroit head coach Mike Babcock.
The Red Wings were outscored, 3-1, in the third period of Game 6 and are -10 in third periods this postseason (20-10). Detroit had a +8 third-period differential during the regular season (43-35).
The Red Wings lost in regulation for the first time this season (regular season and playoffs) when scoring three or more goals (26-1-2).
