2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs News And Notes
MORNING STANLEY CUP OF JOE – MAY 27, 2013
SAN JOSE 2, LOS ANGELES 1; Series tied 3-3
TJ Galiardi scored the game-winner, his first career Stanley Cup playoff goal, and Antti Niemi made 24 saves to force Game 7 and improve San Jose’s record to a perfect 5-0 on home ice this postseason.
DOWN BUT NOT OUT
San Jose forced Game 7 after trailing 3-2 in a series for just the second time in franchise history. The Sharks are 1-8 all-time in series that they have trailed 3-2, their only rally coming in the 1995 Western Conference quarterfinal against Calgary. San Jose beat the Flames 5-4 in double overtime of Game 7. (Elias)
Antti Niemi recorded an assist on TJ Galiardi’s game-winning goal, becoming the first Sharks goalie since Evgeni Nabokov to record a point in a postseason game (6-3 win on May 1, 2002 at Colorado). Niemi’s first career postseason point makes him the third Sharks goaltender (Nabokov and Mike Vernon) to accomplish this feat.
Niemi is 5-0 with a 1.52 goals-against average in five home games in this year’s playoffs, after posting a 5-6 record and 2.89 goals-against average in 11 playoff games in San Jose in his first two seasons with the Sharks (Elias).
SHARK TANK SUCCESS
10 of the Sharks’ 11 power-play goals this postseason have come on home ice, giving San Jose the top-ranked home power-play this postseason (10-for-29, 34.5%) — Joe Thornton, Logan Couture, Patrick Marleau and Dan Boyle have been on the ice for all 11 power-play goals.
With San Jose’s win, home clubs improved to 48-20 (.706) in the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs, including an 18 3 (.857) mark in the second round.
FAR FROM HOLLYWOOD
