2013 Red Sox Spring Training Notes
SCHOOL IN SESSION: The Red Sox open the 2013 spring season with a twin bill against Northeastern University and Boston College at JetBlue Park…It marks the 5th time the Sox have opened their spring exhibition schedule with a doubleheader against NU and BC, also 2008 and 2010-12.
TABLES TURNED: RHP Terry Doyle, invited to Red Sox major league camp as a minor league free agent signing, is slated to pitch against Boston College, his alma mater…He ranks 2nd in BC record books with 258 career strikeouts and is 5th with 18 career wins. Doyle pitched against the Sox as a BC Eagle in the clubs’ exhibition contest on 3/4/05 at City of Palms Park, allowing 2 hits with 1 K (Jeff Bailey) in a scoreless inning of relief.
YOUNG AND NO. 1: SS Xander Bogaerts, who turned 20 on 10/1/12, begins his 1st Major League Spring Training as the youngest player in Red Sox camp…Bogaerts finished 2012 in Double-A Portland and was the Red Sox 2012 Minor League Offensive Player of the Year…He is rated by Baseball America as Boston’s No. 1 prospect and the No. 8 prospect in baseball, the best showing by a Red Sox since Clay Buchholz ranked 4th entering 2008.
FOUR UNDER 50: Baseball America’s Top 100 Prospects included 5 Red Sox farmhands: SS Xander Bogaerts at 8, OF Jackie Bradley Jr. at 31, RHP Matt Barnes at 40, RHP Allen Webster at 49, and LHP Henry Owens at 91. The only other team with 4 prospects listed under 50 on Baseball America’s list was St. Louis.
EARLY TO CAMP: Deven Marrero, Boston’s 1st overall selection in the 2012 June Draft (24th overall), is the 1st Red Sox position player to attend major league camp the spring after being drafted since Scott Hatteberg (1991 draft, 1992 ST)…The only Red Sox pitchers to do it in that time are RHP Craig Hansen (2005 draft, 2006 ST) and Cuban-born LHP Rolando Viera (27-year-old 2001 draftee, 2002 ST).
WELCOME BACK, JOHN: John Farrell enters his 1st season as Red Sox manager, the 46th skipper in club history… He was acquired from the Blue Jays on 10/21/12 and agreed to a 3-year contract through 2015…Farrell guided the Blue Jays in 2011 (81-81, .500) and 2012 (73-89, .451) after serving as Boston’s pitching coach from 2007-10. Farrell is the 3rd Red Sox manager with a previous pro career as a pitcher, joining Cy Young (player/manager for 1st 6 games of 1907) and Joe Kerrigan (last 43 games of 2001)… SD’s Bud Black is the only other active manager who had been a pro pitcher.
ALL NEW STAFF: Boston’s coaches are all new to the big league staff, with Torey Lovullo as Bench Coach, Greg Colbrunn as Hitting Coach, Juan Nieves as Pitching Coach, Brian Butterfield as Third Base Coach, Arnie Beyeler as First Base Coach, Victor Rodriguez in the new position of Assistant Hitting Coach, and Dana LeVangie as Bullpen Coach. This will mark Rodriguez’s 19th year as a coach in the Red Sox system (since 1995) and Beyeler’s 10th (2000-02, 2007-12)…Lovullo managed the Triple-A PawSox in 2010.
WORLDLY VISIONS: 4 players in Red Sox camp have been named to 2013 World Baseball Classic rosters: OF Shane Victorio (USA), RHP Alfredo Aceves (Mexico), INF Xander Bogaerts (Netherlands), and RHP Jose De La Torre (Puerto Rico).
