MORNING STANLEY CUP OF JOE – MAY 5, 2013
WASHINGTON 1, NY RANGERS 0 (OT); WSH leads 2-0 Mike Green scored 8:00 into overtime and Braden Holtby made 24 saves for his first career postseason shutout to lead the Capitals to a 2-0 series advantage.
TORONTO 4, BOSTON 2; series tied 1-1
Phil Kessel scored what proved to be the game-winning goal against his former team and Joffrey Lupul added a pair to help the Maple Leafs even the series.
ANAHEIM 4, DETROIT 0; ANA leads 2-1
Jonas Hiller made 23 saves for his third career playoff shutout and the Ducks used three special teams goals (two on the power play, one
shorthanded) to reclaim the series lead.
LOS ANGELES 1, ST. LOUIS 0; STL leads 2-1 Slava Voynov’s tally early in the second period proved to be the difference as Jonathan Quick stopped all 30 shots he faced to get the Kings back in the series.
GOALIES RISE TO THE OCCASION
Three of Saturday’s four games featured shutouts, including two 1-0 decisions.
Washington’s Braden Holtby made 24 saves for his first career playoff shutout. In 16 total postseason games, Holtby has a 1.77 goals-against average and .940 save percentage. In 57 career regular-season appearances, he has a 2.39 goals-against average and .923 save percentage.
Anaheim’s Jonas Hiller recorded 23 stops for his third career postseason shutout. In 16 total playoff games, Hiller has a 2.19 goals-against average and .940 save percentage. In 276 career regular-season appearances, he has a 2.51 goals-against average and .917 save percentage.
Los Angeles’ Jonathan Quick made 30 saves for his fifth career playoff shutout. In 35 total postseason games, Quick has a 2.05 goals-against average and .929 save percentage, including a 1.41 goals-against average and .946 save percentage during last year’s run to the Stanley Cup. In 286 career regular-season appearances, he has a 2.32 goals-against average and .915 save percentage.
FROM THE BLUE LINE
Washington defenseman Mike Green scored 8:00 into overtime to give the Capitals a 1-0 win over the Rangers, marking the sixth time in NHL postseason history that a defenseman scored the lone goal in a 1-0 overtime victory. The most recent of those goals was scored by San Jose’s Andrei Zyuzin on April 28, 1998, but perhaps the most famous of them was scored by Colorado’s Uwe Krupp, who netted the game-winner in triple-overtime on June 10, 1996, to complete the Avalanche’s four-game sweep of the Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final. (Elias Sports Bureau)
A RARE OCCURRENCE
Saturday’s 4-0 loss marked only the third time in Red Wings playoff history that they suffered a home shutout defeat by a margin of four or more goals.
The other visiting goaltenders with shutouts by that large of a margin at Detroit are two Hall of Famers: Turk Broda of the Maple Leafs on March 28,
1950 (5-0) and Ken Dryden of the Canadiens on April 23, 1978 (8-0). (Elias Sports Bureau)
The Ducks shut out the Red Wings for the first time in their 28 postseason meetings. Anaheim has only shut out Detroit twice in 75 regular-season games – March 30, 1997 (1-0 in OT) and March 14, 2012 (4-0).
The Red Wings had not been shut out in playoffs by any opponent since April 26, 2007, in Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals against San Jose (2-0).
A SELECT FEW
James Reimer made 39 saves to pick up his first career playoff victory, becoming the just the fifth goalie in the last 27 years to earn their first career postseason win with the Maple Leafs. The others were Ken Wregget (April 9, 1986, at Chicago), Allan Bester (April 6, 1988, at Detroit), Jeff Reese (April 10, 1990, vs. St. Louis) and Felix Potvin (April 23, 1993, vs.
SCORING IN BUNCHES
Toronto forward Joffrey Lupul has 16 goals in 41 career postseason games, but 10 of those goals have come in only four games: a four-goal and a two-goal game for Anaheim in 2006, a two-goal game for Philadelphia in 2008 and Saturday’s two-goal performance for Toronto. (Elias Sports Bureau)
The Ducks went 14-5-5 on the road during the regular season, earning the club’s best road points percentage in franchise history (.688). Their 33 points on the road ranked third in the NHL behind Chicago (38) and Pittsburgh (36).
DID YOU KNOW?
The last time the Rangers played in a postseason game that was scoreless through regulation was April 13, 1933. They won that game, 1-0, over the Maple Leafs.
Saturday’s game marked the Capitals’ first 1-0 playoff win since April 12, 2001, against the Penguins.
