MORNING STANLEY CUP OF JOE – MAY 2, 2013
BOSTON 4, TORONTO 1; BOS leads series 1-0 The Bruins scored four unanswered goals and Tuukka Rask made 19 saves for his eighth career playoff win. The line of Milan Lucic (0-2—2), David Krejci (1-2—3) and Nathan Horton (1-0—1) combined for six points, including the game-winner by Horton at 19:48 of the first period.
PITTSBURGH 5, NY ISLANDERS 0; PIT leads series 1-0 Marc-Andre Fleury stopped all 26 shots he faced to record his sixth career postseason shutout, tying Tom Barrasso’s franchise record, and 10 different Penguins registered at least one point.
SAN JOSE 3, VANCOUVER 1; SJ leads series 1-0 Dan Boyle scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period and Patrick Marleau added the insurance marker to lead the Sharks to a 1-0 series lead. The Canucks have lost five straight home playoff games, spanning three years.
EXPERIENCE PAYS OFF
Heading into Wednesday, Boston’s playing roster had a combined 1,104 games of postseason experience compared to Toronto’s 187. No Bruin made his playoff debut, while 10 Maple Leafs (Tyler Bozak, Mikhail Grabovski, Carl Gunnarsson, Nazem Kadri, Leo Komarov, Michael Kostka, Nikolai Kulemin, Clarke MacArthur, Frazer McLaren, James Reimer) played in their first postseason game.
A similar disparity existed in the Pittsburgh-NY Islanders game, where the Penguins’ Game 1 playing roster had a combined 942 games of playoff experience entering the night to the Islanders’ 170. Two Penguins made their postseason debuts (Beau Bennett, Brandon Sutter), while 12 Islanders (Josh Bailey, Casey Cizikas, Travis Hamonic, Thomas Hickey, Andrew MacDonald, Matt Martin, Colin McDonald, Matt Moulson, Frans Nielsen, Kyle Okposo, Kevin Poulin, John Tavares) played in their first playoff game.
REDDEN IGNITES BRUINS
Boston defenseman Wade Redden, who had been mired in the AHL for the past two seasons, sparked the Bruins in the first period with the game-tying goal and primary assist on the eventual game-winner. Redden, 35, was acquired by the Bruins at the Trade Deadline for a conditional pick (that is now a sixth-rounder) and was a healthy scratch for seven of his first eight games with the team. He had not appeared in a playoff game since 2009 and hadn’t scored a postseason goal since May 28, 2007.
Boston forward David Krejci totaled three points (1-2—3) in the Bruins’ series-opening win, matching his totals from the final 13 games of the regular season. Krejci has five career postseason games with three or more points, all of which have come over the last four years – no other NHL player has more than four such games in that span. The 27-year-old Sternberk, Czech Republic, native led all players with 12-11—23 in the 2011 playoffs to help the Bruins capture the Stanley Cup.
DUPUIS TORMENTS ISLES
Pittsburgh forward Pascal Dupuis scored two goals against the Islanders to help secure the Penguins’ Game 1 victory. He has now recorded at least one point in 11 of his last 12 games against the Islanders (10-7—17). Dupuis’ 16 goals and 31 points against the Islanders are his most against any opponent.
Gardena, Calif., product Beau Bennett, slotted on the Penguins fourth line in his playoff debut, sniped a tough-angle shot past Evgeni Nabokov for his first postseason score. The goal, which came at 3:30 of the first period, was Bennett’s first shot of the game on his first shift – it also held up as the game-winner.
Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury has recorded three of his six postseason shutouts in the Penguins’ first game of a playoff year (also in 2008 and 2011). No other active NHL goaltender has more than one shutout in a team’s first game of a playoff year.
Home teams improved to 5-1 through two days of the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Road teams finished last year’s opening round with a 30-18 (.625) record, the highest winning percentage since the NHL switched to the 16-team playoff format in 1979-80. San Jose became the first road team to score more than one goal in this year’s postseason, defeating Vancouver by a 3-1 margin.
