2013 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs News And Notes
MORNING STANLEY CUP OF JOE – MAY 16, 2013
CHICAGO 4, DETROIT 1; CHI leads 1-0
The Blackhawks scored three third-period goals to break a 1-1 tie and Corey Crawford made 20 saves to backstop Chicago to a 1-0 series lead.
JOHNNY ON THE SPOT
Johnny Oduya’s goal at 8:02 of the third period held up as the game-winner, the first of his playoff career (30 games). Oduya has five game-winning goals in 511 career regular-season contests, but has only scored one in his past four seasons (Jan. 7, 2012, as a member of the Winnipeg Jets).
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Corey Crawford recorded 20 saves to pick up his fifth win of the postseason. He has allowed one goal or fewer in four of his six playoff starts (all wins) and leads all postseason netminders with a 1.27 goals-against average. Crawford placed third in goals-against average during the regular season (1.94), helping Chicago earn its fourth William M. Jennings Trophy in franchise history.
SHARPIE EXTENDS STREAK
Patrick Sharp sealed Chicago’s victory with an empty-net goal and also collected two assists for his third multi-point game of the playoffs. He has 6-3—9 during a five-game point streak, the longest of his postseason career. Sharp’s nine points in that span also match his career high for any five-game stretch in the playoffs.
The Blackhawks killed off all three power-play opportunities against and are a perfect 20-for-20 on the penalty kill this postseason. Chicago ranked third in the NHL with an 87.2% penalty kill efficiency rate during the regular season.
This is only the second time since the NHL went to the current conference-based playoff format in 1994 that at least four Original Six teams are among the final eight. It also happened in the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs. (Elias)
